forest floor lichen contemporary painting north cascades

My paintings navigate the tension between the idea of the natural and the actual landscape. The works draw on an interest in the scientific view of nature as well as the role nature occupies in culture and in the human psyche.

Centered on the subject of humanity’s relations with nature, my work is driven by interests that include weeds, fungi, the forest floor, invasive species, and the marginal landscape. I am interested in ideas about "ideal" landscape such as Arcadia, the idea of the garden, or the notion of pure wilderness, as well as how these ideas are manifested in actual places.
